Can I Wash My Drapes?

Are your drapes looking dingy and dirty? Are stains and dust making you consider replacing them? Never fear, most drapes can be cleaned and returned to their original beauty. Valances and fabric shades or blinds can actually prove to be the most challenging, but they're still not incredibly hard to clean. Use this guide to clean your window dressings and get your home back to looking like it did when you first decorated it.

The good news is that almost all sheer curtains are machine washable. Most can even be put in the dryer. Check each panel of sheers in your home for tags. If you can find a tag, there should be fabric care instructions there. If they are cotton, polyester, or nylon, then they should be machine washable. If you're not sure, clean them in cool water with a little bit of clear laundry detergent or baby shampoo. Dyes can sometimes stain fabrics, so I choose to use a detergent without dyes.

Gently move the curtains around in the water every few minutes while you soak them for about an hour. Drain the tub, refill it, and then move them around again. Repeat this process a couple of times to rinse out any remaining soap residues. When they are clean, press the water out of them with a towel. You may want to fold them in half and roll them up in a towel to get remaining water out. Hang them to dry or put them in the dryer on a low heat setting.

Valances can be difficult because sometimes they are attached to the wall in a way that you can't get them down. They may also be wrapped around wood that should not be submerged, or even cardboard. The best way to clean a valance is with a vacuum. Brush the fabric gently with a soft bristled brush while you vacuum it if the fabric is sturdy enough to handle it. I gently pat the fabric with my hand to release settled dust while I do this. You can also use steam from your iron or a steam cleaner to perk-up those dull fabrics.

Drapes are a little trickier and most have to be dry cleaned. Check for tags to see if your drapes could be machine washable. If not, just hang them over hangers and take them to the dry cleaners. They are generally inexpensive to clean and will come back pressed and free of dust and stains.

Before You Sign the Lease, Call a Mold Testing Company

When it comes to purchasing a home or renting an apartment, it is very important that you find out whether your potential home has a problem with mold. No one wants to live in a place where there is a life threatening problem with air quality. Even though you may not think it is that serious, simply inhaling spores can cause some serious respiratory problems later on. If you have children and pets that are going to be living with you, you want to make sure that you are moving into a healthy environment. Many owners, real estate agents and management companies will not give you a definite answer on whether or not mold is present. This is why you should leave the inspection and removal up to a certified mold testing company.

No one is saying you should have every home you are looking at should be tested, but any place you are very serious about should be looked at. Mold testing every home you like can be a bit expensive if you are not willing to weed out some of the homes yourself. Here are some things you should look for that can signal whether or not that home or apartment has a problem with mold.

Do you remember your mother flushing the toilets and looking at the pipes of any place she was interested in? There was a specific reason she did this even though she may have looked silly to you as a child. Pipes that are leaking are a sign of a potential mold problem. Look under the sinks, flush the toilets and take a look at the pipes in the basement. If you see any sign of leakage or moisture, this home may not be safe for you and your family.

Smell the air all throughout the home. If you smell a stale, musty or mildew odor, there may be some spore growth going on where you can't see it. Turn on the A/C. A lot of times mold will grow where there is moisture and the HVAC system is a big breeding ground. If you smell mildew, especially after running the air conditioner for a few moments, move on to the next home on your list.

Be on the lookout for cracked or peeling paint. Also be on the lookout for walls and ceilings that are discolored. These are all signs of an impending mold problem. If you see any rust or condensation, run don't walk out of that place.

Of course, if you see a place that you really want to purchase or lease and you suspect that there is a mold problem, you can always hire a reputable mold testing company to come and investigate. They will be able to tell you if the infestation is mild enough so it can be treated or if the infestation is so severe that the home is not safe for anyone. If you take the proper precautions now, you can avoid a lifetime of health conditions, enormous medical bills and loss of investment.

What to Consider Before Hiring Carpet Cleaning Services

Having a carpet is equivalent to hiring the most competent carpet cleaning professional to handle the tedious job of maintaining the soft texture and colorful nature of the carpet for the longest time possible. It is a lot more affordable to hire the services of a cleaner for two deep-cleaning sessions a year than keep the carpet uncared for only to purchase a new one just a few years later.

Indeed, there are many carpet cleaning companies that would be glad to do this task for you. However, it is of great importance to choose the carpet cleaner with care. You cannot just pick out a carpet cleaner from a multitude of others without prior research. Some of the things you may want to consider would be reviews by past clients, years of experience in the field, working equipment, cleaning method and so much more.

Taking these points into consideration will not only help you get the best cleaner but also give you the satisfaction of knowing that you gave the best shot for one of your choicest furniture. Nevertheless, to stay in the right frame of mind about professional carpet cleaners, you need to get your mind off the cost of getting professionals and focus on the end results. Cost, as many would think, is not nearly as important as choosing the right person for the job. There are even other things that come before the cost issue.

To start with, you must check out the track record and general reputation of the company you want to hire. They should have a website with reviews of past clients and all. You may also do some mouth to mouth research. Simply ask friends, family or colleagues about how they care for their carpets. Whether or not they use professional help, and if they do, which company's services they hire for the cleaning job. You could also do a simple Google search on company reviews to see what people are saying on various sites. Doing this homework would be a good stepping stone to deciding which company you want handling your carpet.

Furthermore, you would want to check that the company you are considering is legitimate and not prone to lawsuits. They should be able to provide proof of this and not just word of mouth assertions. They must have legal backing for their company to run in the country.

After considering legality, you will want to check out the kind of material and equipment used by the company. Such equipment should range from cleaning machines to chemicals. They should demonstrate professional know-how in the field, not just profess it. You may also want to verify if the cleaner has experience cleaning a carpet with fabric like yours. You don't want your carpet destroyed because it would cost you money to get another one. Internet is your best ally to finding such relevant information.

To conclude, I want to insist that these are not the only things to consider before choosing a carpet cleaning company. There are several other things to note and with some internet research, you can come up with your own list of priorities.

Types of Sandstone Sealer

Because of the variety in colors and design performed by nature, sandstone is a popular building material used both for interior and exterior use as well as for domestic and commercial use. A sedimentary rock made up of sand-sized particles of quartz and other minerals, it is a natural occurring building material that has been a popular choice in building temples, cathedrals and monuments since ancient times. It is also considered an eco-friendly material since it can be source near the building site saving precious energy and excess materials from cutting and trimming are not wasted since these can be used in making concrete.

Considered the youngest of the stones, sandstone defers in its porosity, strength and permeability. Thus it has found many uses in gardens as an architectural ornament, as pavement, a fountain or a wall. Sandstone is a popular material as a countertop, tiles for floors, in showers or part of a wall as a vertical design. Although a stone, sandstone is very porous thus is susceptible to stains and damage. Water or any liquid such as oil will be absorbed by the sandstone very quickly and over time will cause damage to the surface thus sandstone sealer is applied to protect it. To further protect the beauty of sandstone, regular cleaning is required since dust may also cause scratches. Sandstone floors should also be cleaned with a cleaned with a dry untreated mop or wiped with warm water with a sponge or mop. Cleansers especially made for sandstone or stone should be used since regular cleaners that contain acid such as bleach or ammonia can damage surface of the sandstone.

There are generally two types of sandstone sealers in the market, the penetrating type and the topical type. The type of sealer usually depends on the location and the application of the sandstone. The penetrating type of sandstone sealers also known as impregnators are designed to penetrate the surface of the sandstone binding with the substrates of the stones. This will help block any liquids from penetrating the surface of the sandstone. Water may be colorless, but when left to penetrate sandstone, it may dry but a stain will result, more so with oils. This type of protection is usually applied in pavements, floors, or any exterior use since impregnators are UV resistant compared to the second type, the topical sealers.

Topical sealers which can either be permanent or strippable. Most are water based and are much cheaper than the penetrating type of sandstone sealer. Topical sealers will only coat the surface and will not penetrate the insides or substrates of the stone. A disadvantage of topical sandstone sealers is it is prone to show wear especially in high traffic areas such as floor. It is also not UV resistant and will yellow over time. Constant stripping and resealing may result in scratches and etch marks on the sandstone although topical sandstone sealers are more skid or slip resistant as compared to penetrating sealers.

Becoming Educated About the Components and Attributes of a Filter Press

You will need an efficient filtration to keep the property spotless and secure. These equipment get rid of metal chips, burnt off carbons, other components from your main pipelines. What's more, it sustains the cleaning material of the principal valve and prevents water contamination. If you need to keep the water system spotless, make sure your filter press is doing the job.

What exactly is a filter press?
The purpose of this device is to fix the volume of water and keep its pressure when made use of. It secures and eliminates unwanted components in the pipe. In this process, the filter determines the amount of solids inside the system. For max purification, the press need to generate more pressure to get rid of the waste materials. A highly effective filter need to have its own pulp to improve the pipelines and dry the filtration.

Changing volume
The filter press additionally eliminates waste materials by using a filter plate generally known as diaphragm or membrane plane. This device has a variable drain-field, which absorbs solids as well as other waste materials. It's closed around the edges and forms an essential "bladder" or diaphragm, which can also inflate to spotless up the pipe system. This is very efficient in reducing the quantity of waste materials in the pipe. It can also minimize the normal elapsed time for a press cycle.

Parts of the filter: How do they do the job?
The two principal sections of the filter is the skeleton and the filter pack. The primary capability of the skeleton is to hold the filter pack together against the pressure developed during the filtration process. These sections are attached either by sidebars or overhead beams.

The filter pack is where the waste materials separation process takes place. It consists of a series of filter components that form chambers when held together in the press skeleton. Each chamber has a series of cylinders or "pips", covered by porous cloth to protect the head of the filter.

These pips form a cycle for the liquid draining from the press. There are also small holes in the drain-field to reduce waste materials and other components. When the plates are held together in a plate pack, the pips discharge the filtered water.

While filtering, the pressure in the chambers generates the flow of water in the pipe. It holds the head of the filter to make sure it eliminates the waste materials. The filter or cloth media then supports the structure for the filter cake when there is too much pressure.

Initially some waste materials may pass through the cloth media causing slight turbidity in the filtrate. This gradually removes larger particles and maintains the bridge of the pipelines.

What is dewatering sludge treatment?
This is another form of filtration. The most common method for dewatering sludge is to squeeze the water out of the sludge. You can also put the slight in a screen to spin the water out. One good example for this is the strainer. It prevents the solids/waste from entering the surface.

These are just some of the things you need to learn concerning filtration. Examine on-line or consult a professional to learn more details on unique filtering units.

Why Is It Important To Wash Your Windows?

How frequently do you wash your windows? Maybe once or twice a year? Perhaps never? But you know window cleaning should be done. There's nothing fascinating about looking out the window and seeing grime instead of having a clear view of how beautiful the day is. Freshly cleaned windows can brighten up a home or office.

Clean windows are an important part of home or office maintenance, but most people don't like to do it. Some people wash their windows a couple of times a year, but that's not enough. Window washing should be done regularly, at least once every two months, depending on the surrounding conditions. If you are in a city, or forest, it's a good idea to wash them at least monthly. If you're in a place where pollen and dirt don't always stick, you can do window cleaning every two months or so.

Importance of Window Cleaning and Window Washing

Windows get dirty over time. If they are not cleaned regularly, they increase the likelihood of irreparable damage as a result of etching of frames and glass. Calcium or lime scale build up on a window could damage and consequently require you to replace the window, which can be costly. Another problem is by not washing your windows, this increases the chances of salt water build-up which could possibly cause corrosion damage.

It is important to have your windows professionally washed or cleaned on a regular basis. Clean windows are obviously very important. Windows permit light to enter into your home which helps in heating your home in winter, thus lowering the electricity bills while brightening your home. Cleaned windows can greatly improve the appearance of a home or office, and also let in more natural light.

Window Cleaning Services

There are many individuals and businesses that can provide monthly or bimonthly services. Some of these services can even come at scheduled times throughout the year. Using this kind of scheduling can be convenient, of course, as it allows you to just go about your business or daily life and not bother about this chore. Once you have decided how often you want your windows cleaned, you can have the window cleaning service come at designated or scheduled times. Once that timeline is convenient for you, and you have a window washing service you are comfortable with, you will never be bothered by it again.

Considerations

Window washing is not one of those tasks many people want to undertake. Yet windows cleaned properly and regularly look fantastic and add the finishing touch on a home. This is because cleaning windows can be a difficult task. All too often windows end up covered with streaks after being washed or cleaned. Washing windows takes effort and time, but usually can be done properly by skilled person. Paying for professional window cleaning services is an investment, not an expense. Over time, it will cost you less. You will also enjoy the added benefit of having a sparkling clean house or office.

How to Get Rid of Clutter on Tables and Counters to Live an Organized and Decluttered Lifestyle

Flat surfaces can be a blessing and a curse. Isn't it nice to see a cleaned off table - just think of all the things we could do; we could set the table for a big family meal, we could sit and use it for crafts, we could let children use it for their homework or drawings, there are so many possibilities! Unfortunately as soon as we have a flat surface cleared we usually start putting things back onto it. It's almost like the side table, kitchen counter, entryway table, coffee table, bathroom counter, and every other flat surface has a clutter magnet on it! There's no arguing here - keeping these surfaces clear is tough for anyone. A good way to deal with these is to go through the normal decluttering process and get to the clean surface. Once you have done that take a look at what you want and what you like on that surface. Does it have a lamp that you use? Is there a picture that you want to display? Figure out what you like the best and how many items this is - we want to limit the number to something reasonable, but we also want to be comfortable with what we choose. Once we have this figured out you will know how many things should be there. When you start to see how this can help you maintain a decluttered environment this should become second nature.

If we let some things sneak back onto a surface, don't worry too much about it. Set a time when you will go over the area and pick things up and put them back where they belong. We can't have a spotless and totally organized house one hundred percent of the time - we would go crazy even trying! The idea is to get used to regularly keeping things under control. This might mean putting your books away every night, cleaning up when you get home from work, or taking Saturday afternoon to pick up after yourself. It is certainly a give and take - you don't want to spend so much time picking up that you start hating spending the time doing it, but you don't want to wait so long that it becomes a huge project again! We want to find what works best for ourselves. It takes time and a little trial and error. After a few weeks it should be fairly evident what works best for you. If by the end of three weeks you can't seem to get a good system going on a regular schedule I suggest setting aside five or ten minutes three nights a week to pick up and clean off your surfaces. Write them down, make a checklist, or set an alarm - just make sure that you are following through and sticking to a schedule. It is like many other habits - you have to keep doing them for it to be effective, the first few weeks can be the most trying but it does become much easier after that.

Flooding Damage Control Tips

If you or someone you know has recently become the victim of flood damage, you know exactly how traumatic such an experience can be. In addition to causing substantial emotional and mental duress, a flood causes physical damage to property and can prove incredibly expensive.

When a flood strikes, the most significant thing that a homeowner can do is to act quickly. The damage caused by a flood can grow exponentially worse if left untreated. Fortunately, there are a number of effective actions you can take immediately if your home has been affected by flood water. Adhering to the following flooding damage control tips can help you salvage a large portion of your possessions and help to expedite the process of reclaiming your home.

Insurance: First and foremost, it is crucial to protect your home and your possessions with a flood insurance policy. Homeowner's insurance does not pay for loss of property due to flood damage. Regardless of where you live, it is important to understand that heavy rains and flash floods can occur without warning, even in areas in which flooding is not common.

Carpets: If your home is affected by flood, the carpeted areas will most likely be the primary focus of your concern. This is because water that seeps into carpeting can quickly form mold and mildew, both of which can be harmful to you and your family and are expensive to remove. Carpets and rugs should be dried as quickly as is possible after excess flood water has been removed. Open all windows in the house in order to allow faster drying and to further prevent mold formation. After the carpet is completely dry, vacuum with an effective carpet cleaner to remove odors and stains.

Flooring: If left untreated, flood damage to floors can eventually cause major structural issues within the foundation of your home. When saturated for an extended period of time, wooden floor boards can harbor moisture for months following the flood. Mold spores are often found in concentrated amounts beneath tiles and stone flooring, as these types of floors are difficult to replace without the assistance of a proficient flooring expert. Take care to remove as much water as possible quickly after flooding has stopped. Use a sump pump to remove excess water to avoid damage and potential injury.

Furniture: Though the majority of flood damaged furniture is relatively difficult to salvage, certain pieces can be saved with thorough cleaning and care. Leather furniture is most frequently counted as a total loss, but if the damage is minimal, it may be possible to replace certain parts and save the entire piece. When treating upholstered furniture that has been submerged in flood water for an extended period of time, consider the fact that cushions and other fillings will most likely need to be replaced. Even if dried completely, this type of stuffing can harbor millions of microscopic mold spores. If possible, remove all exterior coverings and launder them as directed by the manufacturer's labeling. Use a quality rust inhibitor to protect all metal components, such as springs and frames. Wooden frames should be left outside in the sun to dry before you attempt to reassemble furniture.

Safety with electrical appliances: Electrical appliances that have been submerged, even for a short period of time, should not be used until they are serviced by a certified electrical repair professional. Never turn on electrical appliances that have been damaged by flood water, as this can result in overheating, fire or injury by electric shock. An electrician should also be consulted before turning on fans, lights or other appliances operated by a wall switch, as water can remain within the walls of your home and cause major malfunction of wires and circuits.

Safety with gas appliances: Gas appliances that have been damaged by flood water should also be inspected and repaired by a certified professional before they are used. Even if a gas appliance appears to be functioning properly, it is possible that its safety features have been disabled by the presence of standing water, making them extremely dangerous to operate. Gas leaks, also often caused by flood water damage, can cause fires and explosions if exposed to flame. Always turn off the main valve to your water heater if you suspect a gas leak and call your gas company immediately to remedy the problem.

5 Ways to Cut Your Household Costs - Laundry

In this age of austerity, it is common sense to look at ways to reduce our household expenditure and energy consumption. While doing the laundry is an essential chore, there is no reason it has to be more expensive than necessary. Here are five tried and tested ways to cut laundry costs.

Wash at lower temperatures

In the normal scheme of things, it's unnecessary to wash all items at high temperatures. Some people prefer to wash sheets and towels at 60 C, but most items of clothing can be washed at lower temperatures. Even if you wash at a warm temperature, you can use a cold rinse which will still significantly cut back on energy consumption. Experts advise that a 30 C cycle saves 40% more energy than a 40 C cycle. Be aware that washing at lower temperatures may not be as effective at stain removal, so using a cold water detergent is advisable.

Use cheaper detergents

There's no reason to use expensive branded products when according to several industry experts store branded detergents are just as effective. It's easy to become complacent when choosing products and go with what we've always used or known, but shopping around and comparing price per wash really does pay off when it comes to laundry detergents. So try a cheaper detergent and find yourself pleasantly surprised by the savings you could make.

Use less detergent

When comparing that price per wash, be aware that you don't need to use as much detergent as manufacturers' recommend! Blindly following instructions without questioning doesn't always pay off, and this is one excellent example. Manufacturers give us guidelines on how much detergent to use to sell more product, when in reality half the amount will clean as effectively. Not only does this save you money, but experts point out that using excessive amounts of detergent can actually damage your clothing causing the fibres to hold on to dirt.

Wash a full load

It may sound like common sense, but washing a full load each time instead of two half loads will make significant savings in energy and water consumption and therefore utility bills. Experts advise that a full load can use 25% to 50% less energy than two half loads. Be careful not to overload your washing machine however as this will prevent effective cleaning and could damage the machine.

Use an energy efficient washing machine

By law, all new washing machines must display a European Energy Label which gives information about the energy efficiency of the appliance. Ratings range from A+++ to G, with A+++ the most energy efficient and G the least. These labels also give more detailed information on the energy consumption per cycle, as well as information on load capacity, washing performance, spin drying performance and noise levels for both wash and spin cycles. It's well worth giving these labels consideration when buying a new appliance as they could end up saving you significant amounts of money over its lifetime, as well as cutting down on carbon dioxide emissions.

You may also want to look out for the European Ecolabel, a voluntary label that only the best washing machines meeting strict criteria can carry. These criteria include having better energy consumption than the European Energy Label rating A, water consumption of less than 12 litres per kilogram laundry, and noise levels of less than 56 decibels during washing and 76 decibels during spinning.

7 Steps To Longer Lasting Upholstery

It seems like furniture never really gets thrown out. Once the sofa in the living room starts looking shabby, it will go downstairs to live in the basement for a decade or so. Once it starts making the basement look bad, there's always a less picky friend looking for a free sofa. This "Sofa Cycle" is one we're all familiar with.

But what if we could extend the first part of that cycle? What if you could keep your upholstery looking fresh and new longer? You see, by establishing an upholstery care routine and following a few quick tips you can prevent premature shabbiness due to heavy use and soiling. Even lightly used pieces will benefit from these seven tips:

1. Vacuum: The most important thing you can do to keep your upholstery looking clean is to vacuum it regularly. Try to vacuum your furniture once every week to capture dirt, pet hair, and dust. This prevents that debris from being worked into the upholstery fabric.

2. Avoid the Sun: Ideally, keep upholstered furniture away from windows and direct sunlight. This will help prevent the sun from bleaching your fabrics.

3. Rotate Your Cushions: Simple as it sounds, rotating to your cushions can add a lot of life to your furniture. Like rotating your tires, it makes sure that wear is distributed evenly and that one side does not become too dirty or worn.

4. The Sofa is for Sitting: Try to keep the upholstery free of activities or products that could stain or damage it. As much as your kids want to use their markers to draw a picture while sitting on the sofa, its best to keep them away from the fabric until they know how to draw within the lines.

5. The Pet Problem: Great as pets are, they can be terrible for your upholstery. If you allow pets on your furniture, the oils in their hair and fur, the dirt they carry around, and their dander will make your upholstery look and feel dirty faster. To keep your upholstery healthy, keep your pets off of it.

6. Not Just Covers: Sometimes cushion covers can be removed and put in the wash, which is great when you're taking care of an emergency spill. If you do this too often, though, the cushion color won't match the rest of the upholstery that hasn't been cleaned.

7. Hire a Pro: Once or twice a year - depending on how much use the piece sees - you should have a professional clean your upholstery. This will help remove the oils and embedded dirt your vacuuming can't take care of. Most carpet cleaning services also offer upholstery services.

Butcher Chopping Block Maintenance: How to Clean and Oil in Five Easy Steps

Wooden counter tops add warmth and beauty to any kitchen. Unlike other trendy counter top surfaces, wooden counter tops are timeless and never go out of style. They also add functional value to a kitchen that appeals to chefs and foodies. However, they are not completely care free. They need to be kept clean and sealed in order to maintain the surface. Proper maintenance will not only lengthen the life of your counter top, but will keep it hygienic. Five easy steps for maintaining all of your wooden cutting surfaces, including counter tops and chopping blocks are listed below.

You will need:

Dish detergent

Scrubby sponge

White vinegar

Either lemon juice and salt Or water and baking soda

Mineral oil

Step one - Clean.

Cleaning the board with warm soapy water and a scrubbing sponge will get off any visible debris and will remove a small amount of oil from the board. Use warm water and scrub gently. You aren't trying to sanitize with this step so don't use hot water. Hot water is unnecessarily aggressive and will damage the board over time. Rinse all of the soap off when the surface is clean.

A word of caution - do not submerge portable boards in water. Water will soak into the wood fibers causing the wood to swell and warp. This breaks the glue bond in the lamination. Then as the wood dries, it cracks.

Step two - Sanitize.

Sanitize your butcher board by wiping it down with full strength white vinegar. Why vinegar? Vinegar is an effective disinfectant against common kitchen bugs such as e.coli, staphylococcus, and salmonella. Vinegar is not damaging to the wood fibers like chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach is corrosive and it's effects are accumulative. Over time it changes the color of the wood and it breaks down the lignan (the natural glue between the fibers). The wood will look ashy even after it is oiled and the fibers will have microscopic tatters for bacteria to hide in. It's a good idea to keep a spray bottle of vinegar handy to use as a regular sanitizer for your wooden cutting surfaces.

I use vinegar and air drying to sanitize my wooden counter tops and it works great. However, if you need extra assurances, you can allow your butcher board to dry after the vinegar treatment, then wipe it down with 3% hydrogen peroxide.

After sanitizing, you can move to steps four and five, allowing the board to dry and then oiling it. Or you can do some additional deep cleaning as in step three if you have a heavy build up of oils, odors, or stains.

Step three - Deep Cleaning

Make a paste of salt and lemon juice OR water and baking soda. Using a scrubby sponge, lightly swirl the paste around focusing on stains if you have any. This paste mixture will lightly strip away old oils. It will also deodorize the wood and lighten stains. Both lemon juice and baking soda are aggressive cleaners so don't allow them to just sit on the board for hours. Just gently scrub the paste around for a few minutes and rinse it completely away when you are done.

Step four - Dry

Allow block to dry completely....over night is best. A dry environment is the best defense against bacteria, mold and virus. Allowing the board to dry completely before oiling it helps to lock moisture OUT rather than sealing it in. Also, the dryer the wood is, the more easily it will soak up oil.

Before you oil your butcher board look it over. If you still have stains use a sanding block to remove light stains or use a palm sander with a fine grit paper to sand down the entire board.

Step five - Seal with oil

Oil your butcher board. Oiling your wooden counter tops and cutting boards helps to protect the wood from damage and keeps the surface hygienic. The oil creates a water resistant barrier. It keeps the wood dry and keeps bacteria out. The best oil to use is food grade mineral oil as it will not go rancid the way vegetable based oils will. This can be found in the laxative department of your local drug store or you may find it also at your local hardware store. Just pour a little onto the board and rub it in with your clean hands or use a clean lint free rag. If you really want to pump up the water resistance of your oil, you can warm it and add bees wax or paraffin to it. Use a ratio of one part wax to nine parts oil. When this oil has soaked into your wood, it will leave behind a thin waxy layer that is even more water resistant!

Every type of counter top needs basic maintenance. Granite needs polishing. The grout in a tile counter top needs scrubbing. A wooden counter top or butcher chopping block needs to be cleaned and oiled. With a little bit of care your wooden cutting surfaces can last life times and add functional value to your kitchen.

Taking Good Care of Your Hard Wood Floor With Wax Finish

The best advantage of having hard wood floor is that you don't have to worry about allergens getting trapped like they do in carpet. Cleaning the floor at least twice a week using the right vacuum cleaner, sweeper, dry mop and wood floor cleaner, keeps the floor from abrasive build up and keeps its shine much longer.

If stains find its way to your floor, clean it right away. This will prevent the substance from staining the hard wood floor and saves you the hassle of having to remove the stain later on. To clean the stain on the floor use a hot water, a clean cloth and a cleaning solution that is suited for hard wood floors. Do not use abrasive cleaners as it will damage the coating of the floor.

Maintenance Guide for Waxed Finish Hard Wood Floors

If vacuum cleaning, mopping or sweeping does not make your wax finish floor shiny again, buffing it is your next best choice. Buffing should be done first before you apply a second coat. Often times you would not need a new layer to coat after buffing. If buffing does not make your floor shiny, you'll have to use a liquid wax for wood floors and a wood floor cleaner. Apply the wax to the floor and buff it after it dries.

In removing stains from waxed finish floors, here are some tips that you can follow:

Ink stains and water Stains- to remove this type of stain use a #000 steel wool. If it won't work try using a sand paper with fine grain together with a wood floor cleaner and a #00 steel wool. After that make sure you wax and buff the area.

Common Surface Marks- common scratches and marks on the surface of your wax finish floor can be adhered by applying wax on the area. Buff the area to restore its shine.

Food stains- In cleaning this type of stain use a damp cloth and start cleaning on the outer surface of the stain and move your way inside. After removing the stain see to it that you dry and wax it afterwards.

Sticky Stains- harden the stain by applying a cold pack of ice. When the stain hardens it should crumble off of the floor. Use a rag or cloth to clean the stain off.

Furthermore, to avoid unwanted scratches on your floor, never drag heavy equipment and furniture across your waxed floor. Also, if your kitchen and bath room floors are made of wax coated hardwood floors, place a rug directly below the sink and on the door step of the bathrooms.

How to Keep Your New Carpet Looking Beautiful

When you buy a home, you want to decorate it with carpeting to match your personal style. Over time, carpet can get dirty and dingy from being walked on constantly. Luckily, there are measures you can take to ensure your carpet will last as long as possible. Here are some tips to care for your home's carpet to keep it looking nice and new.

Vacuum Regularly

Be sure to vacuum your carpet often; one to two times a week is best. Vacuuming will help to remove any soil that can ruin the fibers of your carpet. It is important that you continue to vacuum since much of the dirt that can slice your carpet fibers is not visible to the naked eye.

Check Your Carpet Warranty

When you first, make sure read the manufacturer's warranty. The warranty should spell out any specific instructions on what you need to do to keep your warranty valid. If the carpet manufacturer has any recommendations, try your best to follow it.

Spot Clean When Your Carpet Gets Soiled

It is inevitable; eventually something will get spilt or dragged onto your new carpet. New carpet typically comes with an anti-stain barrier to help protect your carpet from such events. Some anti-stain technology is better than others, and your first spill is the perfect time to test yours out. Your manufacturer warranty should list what types of stains are covered under warranty, and also what their recommended method for spot cleaning is.

Protect Your Carpet

Carpet is made to be walked on. The more people you have living in your home the more wear and tear your carpet will endure. Carpet tends to wear down first in high-traffic areas, such as those in front of the front door or in a hallway. To protect your carpet from such wear and tear, use runners or mats in those high-traffic areas. Runners can be placed down your hallway to protect rug burn, the wearing down of your carpet. You can also use a sticky-backed plastic on your stairs to help protect the carpet from constant use. Rearranging your furniture every now and then can also help by changing the pattern of heavy traffic in your home.

Get Professional Cleaning

In general, it is best to have your carpet clean by a professional carpet cleaning company once a year. If you have areas that are subjected to really heavy traffic and a lot of dirt, you may want to have it cleaned more often than. Professional cleaning does not leave any residue, and completely and thoroughly gets the dirt and stains out of your carpet. Many anti-stain carpet manufacturers state in their warranties that you should have your carpet professionally cleaned every other year. Cleaning by a professional can remove the dirt and soil that vacuuming may leave behind.

Advantages of Using an Electric Pressure Washer Over Other Models

A powerful and reliable electric pressure washer can help you manage various types of cleaning tasks effortlessly. They are the first choice of homeowners because they do not emit any fumes or soot, operate with lesser noise as compared to cleaning machines that run on gas and are generally easy to handle. You just have to plug the machine into the nearest electrical source and it would be ready for use.

An electric pressure washer can be used in an enclosed, unventilated room such as a garage or basement and do a variety of cleaning tasks efficiently and quickly. The best pressure washing machines are truly versatile and can be employed for residential as well as commercial cleaning because of their advanced features and ability to remove dirt, grime and stains from almost any surface.

Convenient to Use, Eco- Friendly and Affordable
Electric pressure washing machines are considered eco-friendly because you are spared the hassle of using expensive gas and fuel. They do not pollute your surroundings as there are no emissions. They do not increase pollution in the room or the building by releasing combustion by-products as gas-operated machines do. Another advantage of using an electric powered cleaning machine is that they are generally lighter than fuel powered machines and hence easy to carry and operate.

Output from the best electrically operated cleaning machines are just as powerful as gasoline or fuel operated machines. Reputable brands can deliver output pressure of up to 8000 psi while the output temperature can also be as high as 330°F. According to industry experts, pressure levels of 3000 psi are sufficient to handle the toughest of cleaning tasks effectively.

The latest models from reputable suppliers have features designed to enhance user experience and tackle the most challenging of cleaning tasks with ease. The feature of tri-mode capability for instance, allows the machine to be used as a steam, cold water, and hot water pressure washer. Thus, you can enjoy the benefits of all the three features in one single electric pressure washer.

Automatic Shutoff Technology - An Advanced Feature that Eases Cleaning Tasks
High pressure washers from the best suppliers in business come with a two-gun feature that allows two operators to use the machine simultaneously. This helps in reducing the cleaning time by half. There are other highly useful features such as automatic shut off. This is a unique aspect of industrial pressure washing machines that run on electricity.

Automatic shut off allows operators to shut off or pause the operation of the high pressure washing machines without having to reach the water supply source or the power supply outlet. This can prove to be highly convenient and time saving for those using industrial pressure cleaners. Industrial cleaning involves covering large areas in minimum of time and with a higher degree of convenience. These advanced cleaning machines can prove to be as effective as gas pressure washers when it comes to industrial cleaning.

While gas pressure washers too, can be used as hot water pressure washer, operators and homeowners find it easy and affordable to use an electric pressure cleaner with tri mode capabilities for the same applications because of the low cost and high convenience factors.

How Often Should A Carpet Be Cleaned?

Do you wait until the carpet starts to look dirty before calling a professional carpet cleaning company to perform 'restorative carpet cleaning?

Waiting for a carpet to look dirty before calling in the cleaners is what most people do but, is that leaving it too late?

When you leave a carpet so long that it looks dirty, lots of permanent damage has already occurred. You will have been walking on a carpet, with lots of trapped dirt, cutting away at the fibres, causing premature wear. This same dirt will have ground its way into the fibres and permanently changed the colour of the carpet.

Leaving the carpet to look dirty before cleaning means, your carpet has already worn down and permanently discoloured. How can you prevent this from happening?

Professional carpet cleaning is the only way to guarantee removal of deep down dirt, that causes wear and discolouration, but how often should you perform professional carpet cleaning?

If you leave carpet cleaning to once a year, you can expect the level of appearance to be as follows

(The values change depending on variables such as number of children, number of pets and frequency of vacuum maintenance.)

On average, you can expect a carpet to look 50% of what it did, when new, after just one year. By having professional carpet cleaners in, you can restore the appearance to 80% of what it was when new. Leave the carpet another year and, the carpet deteriorates to look 30% of what it looked like when new. Having your carpet professionally cleaned at the end of year 2 restores the look to 50% of what it looked like when new. At the end of year 3, the carpet falls to look 20% of what it did when new and professional cleaning of the carpet at the end of 3 years improves the look to 40% of what it did when new.

Have your carpet professionally cleaned once a year and, after 3 years you can expect it to look 40% of what it did when it was new!

Having carpet protection applied at the same time as professional carpet cleaning, improves the level of appearance significantly.

Can You Have Your Carpet Professionally Cleaned Every Month?

The level of appearance improves dramatically, if you can have your carpets professionally cleaned on a monthly basis. Have your carpet professionally cleaned once a Month and, after 3 years you can expect it to look 80% of what it did when it was new! In fact, the level of appearance only drops a small amount and, if the carpet also had carpet protector applied on a regular basis. The carpet would still look almost like new after 3 Years of use!

You now know that you should have your carpets cleaned as often as possible but, how often should your type of household have professional carpet cleaning?

Below, is a carpet cleaning maintenance plan, which is the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification) guide to carpet cleaning frequencies. "The Clean Trust S100 Standard and Reference Guide for Professional Carpet Cleaning".

The IICRC (or The Clean Trust as they are now known) is one of the world's foremost authority and examining board for professional carpet cleaners.

When looking at the following carpet cleaning frequency guide, please consider factors such as:-

Amount of trafficSoil levelsVacuuming schedulesSpot cleaning methodsProfessional periodic cleaning frequencyRestorative professional carpet cleaning

Please note: Follow the carpet manufacturers cleaning schedule to maintain your warranty.

Carpet Cleaning Maintenance Plan

Should your household have...

Light Soiling

Vacuum once a weekSpot clean as and when requiredProfessionally clean 'tracking areas' every 12-18 MonthsRestore - Professionally clean all areas every 2 Years or as manufacturer's warranty

Normal Soiling (families with children or elderly staying at home)

Vacuum twice per weekSpot clean as and when requiredProfessionally clean 'tracking areas' every 6-12 MonthsRestore - Professionally clean all areas annually

Pipes and Home Cleaning 101

In order for you to stop having to clean your drains so much, you need to be careful about what you put down there. Some people are putting grease, hair and coffee grounds into the pipes. Add soap scum to this and you have not only a messy pipe system but a clogged one as well. Cooking grease should be put into a metal or plastic container and then disposed of in the trash can. Some communities also have special instructions regarding how to dispose of oil properly. Coffee grounds can either be thrown in the trash or used as mulch for your garden. You can purchase a drain holder that covers the drain and eliminate the problem of hair and soap scum blockages.

You should clean the pipes on a regular basis. This will help keep them running normally and will stop any nasty odors from developing. One home cleaning tip is to include running the hot water after each time you use the sink. Hot water will loosen up any clogs and make the pipes run smoothly. You can also use baking soda in the drain and then run some hot water after pouring it in the pipes to get rid of any offending odors. Another great method to clean your pipes is to empty a cup of vinegar down the drain and allow it to set for half an hour. Then turn on the hot water. Vinegar contains naturally occurring acid which helps to loosen up any sludge in your pipes.

If you find that your pipes are getting clogged on a regular basis, there are some things you can do to prevent this. In fact this little home cleaning trick works on pipes, sinks and showers. Take a half a cup of baking soda, a half a cup of salt, a half a cup of vinegar and 2 quarts of boiling water. Just before turning in for the night, pour the solution of salt and baking soda down the drain. Then add the vinegar and let it sit for about a minute. Then add the 2 quarts of boiling water. If your sink has a garbage disposal, there is another trick that you can try. Take an ice cube tray and fill it half vinegar and half water. You need to have the water because vinegar by itself will not freeze. Be sure to let everyone in the household know that certain trays have vinegar in them. Once the trays of vinegar ice are frozen, turn on your garbage disposal and add the ice cubes. Vinegar is an acid which is great for cleaning garbage disposal as well as the pipes. If you absolutely cannot stand the smell of vinegar, you can just freeze a regular tray of ice cubes, pour them down your garbage disposal and then add a lemon that is sliced up. You will be surprised that your disposal and your entire kitchen smells amazing.

You can try all these great home cleaning tricks to keep your drain clean and to prevent it from clogging. Just remember that there are some things that are not made to go down any pipes or drains.

Getting Rid of Mold and Mildew in Your Home

Mildew is the term given to various mold and fungi accumulation. It usually grows on a flat and moist surface. It is usually found in bathtubs, showers, attic, basement, curtains, leather couches, window sills, and many more. It is a bad sign if you see growing molds in your home. It signifies that there is imbalance. Mildew may damage the surface where it is growing through decomposition and staining. It can also be harmful to the health due to the spores it builds. Do not withstand the fact that it is not pleasing to look at and can give a bad smell in the house. There are lots of reasons why you should eliminate mold and mildew in your house. Removing the mold and mildew should be your first step followed by repairing the damage done, and finally, keeping your home free from mold and mildew.

How to remove and control mold build up:

Mold can grow in winter and summer months. During winter, the air in the house is moist which can result to mold accumulation. On summer months, mold still grows because of the high humidity level. You should keep your home free from mold anytime of the month by doing preventive guidelines.
Clean your bathroom. Mold grows tremendously in bathrooms. One best substance to use in cleaning molds in the bathroom is the vinegar. Spray or sprinkle vinegar in areas that are more likely to accumulate molds. These areas include under your faucet, bathroom shower curtains, tile grouts in the floor, and walls near the sink. You can also mop your floor with water and vinegar.
Clean other parts of your home. Your kitchen is also another favorite spot of molds. Food leftovers, gloomy spaces in the cupboards, dirt and oil spills during and after cooking and moisture on the tile surface are all causes of molds in the kitchen. Spray your dish drier and chopping board with vinegar and anything that have contact with food. Do these regularly to prevent bacteria and mold build up.
Use air conditioner during summer when it is humid and hot outside. Humidity is one factor for growing molds. Dust mites also grow on humid season. It is said that 65% to 70% of humid is essential for a growing mold. Using air conditioner doe not only give you cool air but also prevents mold as well. Maintain a temperature of 30% to 50% to ensure that mold will not grow anywhere in your home.
During winter where it is very cold, mold may still develop. Again, maintain a temperature of 30% to 50%. You may use a dehumidifier if you have one at home.
Carpets may increase the risk of developing molds in your house because they are susceptible to dirt and moisture. It can also bring in fleas and dust mites. You can either take off your carpet to avoid these problems or clean it with baking soda regularly.

How to remove mildew:

Mold and mildew are quite the same and because of this, the method of preventing them is quite the same also.
Avoid moisture in your home. Extreme moisture can not only cause mildew, it can also damage your structure especially wood and drywall materials. To avoid too much moist in your home, fix leaking faucets or sink. Check your pipes if there are broken lines. Use air conditioners and dehumidifiers as needed. Maintain the right temperature all over the house including the basement and attic.
Remove anything that was damaged by mildew. If something has been infested by mildew, take it as a whole right away. If the damaged thing is not removed, the mildew will further develop. Be careful in removing the object to prevent you from inhaling the spores of the mildew.
Clean and dry the surfaces in the house. Ensure that every part of the house is clean most importantly the bathroom and the kitchen where moist and dirt are always present. After cleaning the whole house, dry the surfaces to avoid moisture. Ensure also that there is proper ventilation all over the house to maintain the right temperature all throughout the year.

How Does Carpet Fiber Protection Work?

Win/win Benefit of stain guard protection

This process will help people to protect their carpets. It is part of a pro-active Carpet maintenance. The main reason people replace carpets is because of wear patterns and stains.

Carpet fibers such as olefin, polyester and smartstrand are more effective than nylon at not absorbing stains, however they are not as durable as nylon and get replace because they wear out faster. To combine the durability and cleanability of nylon with the stain resisting ability of these other fibers, flourochemical stain protection can be used.

How does it work?
We use a technology flourochemical protectant that actually really does work well. It creates a negative ionic charge in the carpets which repels liquids and soils. Kind of like magnets that push away from each other. They create more surface tension on the carpet fibers so that spills bead up on them better. There is a difference between stain resistant carpets and applying fiber protection. Stain resistant carpet have a dye blocker injected into the fibers in the dyeing process while fiber protection is applied to carpet fibers after the dyeing process.

Does this mean that your carpets won't stain or get dirty?

No it means it gives you time to remove the spill or soil before it penetrates into the carpet fibers.

How long does it last?
It depends on the amount and type of traffic on the carpets. For best results Heavy traffic areas should have it reapplied every year and light traffic areas every other year. Areas that are likely to have a lot of spills or where the dogs like to lay down are good spots to apply protection.

Applying fiber protection to your upholstery is also a good idea. On the arms where grubby hands rest of where the back of the head can leave oil from hair are places that should have fiber protection applied.

If your fibers are natural fibers such as cotton or wool then you need to use a solvent based protectant because leaving natural fibers wet too long can create browning problems.

Other cautions; Using high alkaline cleaning solutions with a ph of over 10 may remove the protectant from the carpets. If a high alkaline solutions has been used on the carpets, be sure to thoroughly rinse out the area using an acidic rinse. White vinegar diluted in water works fine. Then apply more protectant to the area. You can purchase protectant from your local carpet cleaning supply store.

Make your carpets look better and last longer with carpet fiber protection.

Clean Air Means Less House Cleaning and Dusting? Yep, Sure Does!

Does it seem like you're cleaning all the time? And every time you turn around, there's another layer of dust on that piece of furniture? Time for carpet cleaning...again?! Does house cleaning ever end??!!

Let's face it. Very few of us have time to constantly clean and dust. We're just too busy! Plus, in this economy, most of us don't have the extra money for house cleaning services, either! Where does this dust and dirt come from anyway?

Well, it's a combination of stuff we track in from outside, the dust from your ducts / air conditioner vents, and tiny particles that are released when our hands and feet rub across furniture, bedding, carpets, etc. The air that's moving inside the room picks up the particles and those particles settle on everything, and there you go-more dusting and cleaning to do. Ugh.

You mean having clean air can really help us keep up with our fast-paced lives, reduce house cleaning time and the cost of cleaning supplies? Absolutely. It just makes sense. If you can remove the particles from the air, then there will be less to settle and accumulate-in the corners, and in our noses! And you'll get the added benefit of feeling better, with less sneezing and coughing, or even asthma attacks. Don't forget, dust is very dirty stuff, composed of dirt, dead skin cells, dust mite/insect parts, pet dander, bacteria, viruses, pollen, mold spores and more. In a month or so, you'll be happy to notice that you just aren't buying as much cleaning supplies, cleaning services, Swiffer duster refills, carpet cleaning--and probably less allergy medications!

So how do we do clean up the air? All you need is a 1) a good allergy rated filter in your home a/c system, 1500 rating or higher, and 2) get a quality air purifier that can handle the amount of air in your home or room, and has a true HEPA filter, which will remove 99.97% or higher of the particles floating around. Be sure to change the air filter in your home at least every 3 months, and the HEPA filter in your air purifier as indicated by the manufacturer. And the air purifier will actually extend the life of the home air filter, too, so that's another cost reduction!

One very good air purifier we found that is very good for getting rid of dust is the Blueair 403 This unit features durable steel construction, a powerful HEPA filter that removes up to 99.99% of particles, healthy negative ions to further purify the air, and an available lifetime warranty. This will handle rooms 375 square feet and smaller.

For larger spaces, up to 1500 square feet, the Aller Air 5000 Exec works very well. This air purifier features a true HEPA filter, a pre-filter, and a full 18 pounds of activated carbon to remove chemical vapors and odors-vapors and odors that cause allergy attacks, headaches, and more! Got headaches that you can't put your finger on? It really could be in the air!

Both of these air purifiers will definitely reduce the need for house cleaning and dusting, and leave you more time for the important things like family and fun times.

As always, if you have any questions, give us a call at 1-800-701-2513. The expert staff at Air Purifiers and Cleaners.com is standing by to help.

5 Ways to Cut Your Household Costs - Stain Removal

There is a huge diversity of specialist cleaning products available to tackle specific stains encountered on clothing or upholstery. Finding the appropriate product for a specific stain cannot only be time consuming, but also expensive. Most people do not realise that by utilising items commonly found in the kitchen cupboard at home, they can avoid spending money on expensive specialist stain removal products. Here are five items that are great at removing stains:

Bleach:
Most people have a bottle of bleach in the home. Bleach uses a process called "oxidisation" to remove stains from fabric. Bleach is particularly effective on white cotton items. A little dilute bleach can be dabbed on a stubborn stain on a white cotton shirt before washing. White cotton or linen items that have become discoloured over time can be rejuvenated by washing them in bleach diluted in plenty of hot water, or soaking for a few hours before washing the items as normal. The combination of bleach and sunlight is a powerful stain remover, so items treated with bleach should be hung outside in the sunshine to achieve the best stain removal effect.

Care must be taken with bleach, as it is not suitable for use on all fabrics and should never be used on delicate fabrics or dark coloured materials.

Hairspray:
Hairspray is a great stain remover for ink stains. If a child gets ink onto upholstery, the area can simply be sprayed lightly with hairspray before wiping gently with a cloth. It also works well on shirts if a pen has leaked into the pocket. A spray containing alcohol works best. A damp rag should be placed under the stain and then the hairspray should be sprayed directly onto the stained area. By blotting with a damp cloth, the stain should be lifted out of the fabric.

Methylated Spirits:
Methylated spirit is a strong solvent, and good at removing a variety of stains from fabrics. It is especially good at removing greasy food stains or stains from cosmetics, such as lipstick. The stain should be dabbed with spirit and left for five minutes before rinsing in warm water. This method should only be used on colourfast fabrics. Methylated spirit is also useful for removing felt tip pen stains.

Washing Up Liquid/Soap:
For everyday stains, the simple action of rubbing the area with a little soap or washing up liquid can be enough to break up the stain and allow it to be washed away easily in the laundry. Soap is also particularly effective on felt tip pen stains and bloodstains. Hair dye splashed on fabric is best treated with a cup of warm water containing a good squeeze of washing up liquid. Soap is also effective at removing lipstick stains from clothing.

White Vinegar:
White vinegar has a variety of cleaning applications in the home and is a fantastic stain remover. This is because the acetic acid is able to cut through grease and dirt. The best way to use white vinegar is to dilute it and put it in a spray bottle for pre-treating items before washing, such as grubby cuffs and sleeves on shirts or the underarm areas of garments. Items can also be soaked in dilute white vinegar before washing. White vinegar is also effective at removing mildew stains from clothing and shower curtains.

As you can see, many effective stain removal products can be found in the home, simply by looking in the kitchen and bathroom cupboards. These basic items can tackle a variety of commonly encountered stains, minimizing the need to purchase expensive chemical stain removal products.

How to Get the Most Out of Your House Cleaning Service

Anyone who has his or her home or apartment regularly cleaned by a professional service crew knows how nice it is not to do the tough cleaning. But a cleaning service isn't cheap, so it pays to know a few tricks to get the most out of your crew.

Most people do a little straightening up before the cleaners arrive, but it pays to do a little more. First, if you have not yet put jewelry, cash, and other valuables out of the way, then you need to do it right away. If you've done a thorough job screening your service, the risk of outright theft is probably low. Taking things out of sight will eliminate any problems or misunderstanding, all the more.

Also try and reduce clutter around the house before the cleaners come. Kid's toys or art projects on the counters, paperwork on the kitchen table, blow dryers, and even makeup on the bathroom sink all slow things down where cleaners will just take care of them. Take a moment and put them aside so that the team can get to every spot easily.

If you want hard-to-reach areas cleaned, like behind furniture and such, move items before the cleaners come. Provide a note to direct them what you want done. In the course of normal cleaning, most services do not move furniture or heavy objects.

Be specific about how you like things cleaned and what is important to you. Most services strive to do a good and thorough job, but everyone seems to have one cleaning pet peeve or a spot they like cleaned in a certain way. Instead of being frustrated, you need to be specific. Talk with the group supervisor and show to him or her specifically where or what it is you want done and its value to you. Most cleaners will gladly adapt their routine.

While it's not necessary to leave your house or apartment while the cleaners are there, try and stay out of the way. Most cleaners have a routine they follow, so try, and avoid redirecting them to other rooms or tasks. The same goes for kids and pets. With fewer disruptions, the cleaners will do a better job.

Try not to offer cleaners food or drink, or engage in some chit-chat. While you might feel this is a polite gesture, understand that the workers are there to do their job where they need to move on to the next client, in the most efficient means. Again, the fewer the disruptions, the better cleaners can be.

If you use the same group on a regular basis, don't forget to show your appreciation. This is especially important if you've asked them to do extra work. While tipping is not required, it is appreciated. Also, don't forget the end-of-year gratuities and thanks.

Lastly and most importantly, you need to keep up with the communication. If something is not being done the way you like it, provide constructive feedback right away. Cleaners rely on pointers where they want to keep their clients happy and satisfied with their work. That being said, if the same problems keep cropping up and the work isn't being done to your satisfaction, it may be time for you to look for a new provider.

Professional Window Cleaning Means Opportunity for Window Advertising

The windows of a building not only allow your employees to see out, but they also allow your customers to see in.  Getting professional window cleaning is important to make sure customers can actually see inside, but there are other reasons your company might need to hire window cleaners regularly.  If you have large windows on your storefront, you can use them as much more than sneak peeks or enticing temptations for customers, they can become great advertising opportunities.

Window Displays

Many stores create great displays to show off their products to customers.  These displays could just be architecturally stacked products that attract the eye.  They could also be entire scenes that use a variety of products to tell a story a passer-by might relate to.  A display might even incorporate moving parts like waving mannequins or toy trains to catch people's attention.  Whatever you choose to put in your window, it's important to keep the window clean, so the display is easily viewed and appreciated.  If you are displaying tasty morsels or fun toys, you might get a few fingerprint smudges from kids who want to come in for a closer look as they drool over your work.  This gives you yet another reason to make sure both the inside and outside of your windows are professionally cleaned.

Window Art

Large panes of glass also make great advertising space as a flat surface.  Window paints offer all kinds of opportunities for letting the public know what's in your store.  You can advertise sales, create seasonal pictures involving your products or promos, or invite artists to create beautiful murals inspired by your company's motto or service.  In between each of these works of advertising art, it's important to make sure the window gets a good cleaning.  When you hire CIA for professional window cleaning in Melbourne, you can be sure no trace of the advertising is left behind, so you have a fresh canvas to start with when you're ready to start a new promotion.

Window Demos

Some places even go so far as to conduct demos right in their front windows.  People can stop on the street to watch, which will cause others to stop to see what they're so focused on.  Eventually, you can gather quite a crowd.  Restaurants in New York have been known to put their pasta makers or pizza dough tossers in the windows to show that their ingredients are made fresh.  Other companies, particularly toy companies, enjoy putting an employee in the window playing with their latest and greatest toys to get kids to pull their parents over to the store.  Whatever you decide to demo in your window, just make sure window cleaners like those at CIA have left it clear and clean, so everyone can enjoy your product and service before they stop in to buy it.  And always remember, professional window cleaning should mean great window advertising.

Carpet Cleaning Techniques to Deal with Common Carpet Stains

One of the biggest disadvantages of carpet flooring is its tendency to get easily stained. Compared to concrete or tile flooring, carpet is made of textile, a very porous material that pretty much acts as a dust and stain magnet. Fortunately, there are various techniques that can help deal with unsightly carpet stains.

Carpet stain removal techniques vary depending on the type of stain. One of the most common types of stains are pet stains like dog or cat urine. If you have carpet flooring and you allow your pet to stay in your house, you must find a good way to get rid of urine stains on a regular basis. Moistening and scrubbing the stained area using water-detergent solution is usually more than enough to remove the stain while water-vinegar solution applied in the area can help neutralize the smell.

Carpet stains are a common sight for kitchens in homes with full carpet flooring because there are always different types of liquids that can get spilled anytime. To deal with oil, you can make a simple mixture of water and detergent will do since the only substance that can mix water and oil is soap. Dealing with other types of carpet stains in the kitchen usually require the same cleaning agents, particularly vinegar-water and water-detergent solution.
Blood is the most misunderstood type of carpet stain. Blood stains should be removed using cold water. Hot water causes the blood to clot even more and set even further. This why even the most potent hot water extraction methods don't work well on blood stains.

In children and study rooms, the most common type of carpet stains are ink blots. Expert carpet cleaners Indianapolis has to offer recommend dampening the stained area with isopropyl alcohol-saturated cloth. Ink blots dislodge or dissolve in alcohol by scrubbing the surface mildly, but too much alcohol can damage the carpet dye and create faded spots.

Some stains like battery oil and mercury cannot be dealt with using home techniques. In fact, carpets that are stained with mercury must be disposed immediately. Indianapolis carpet cleaning professionals strongly advise homeowners to leave mercury stains to the professionals since the substance is considered highly.

Keep Your Technology Running Better with Commercial Cleaning

Most businesses these days are full of technology.  In fact, many office buildings rely so heavily on their technology that their business would slow to a crawl if they didn't have it.  If this is the case with your business, you've probably experienced more than a few occasions when business doesn't go quite as planned because your machines just weren't running right.  Sitting around and waiting for a repair technician can be very frustrating, especially when the problem could have been prevented by making sure you had regular commercial cleaning.

Computers

Commercial cleaning in Melbourne isn't just for the building itself, it's also good for your technology.  Computers have a lot of little nooks and crannies that attract dust like magnets.  When dust clogs keyboards for instance, keys can end up sticking or slowing down the person who is typing.  Dirty hands, dust in the air, and crumbs from between break snacks make this even worse.  It's important to make sure keyboards are cleaned regularly along with other computer parts.  If the room itself is kept cleaner, less dust will settle on hard drives.  Because hard drives spin, dust can cause them to become unbalanced, making them work inefficiently and loudly.  If you hear your hard drive making some odd noises, it's probably due for a cleaning.  Monitors should also be wiped down with soft cloths that won't scratch them.  Hiring a professional cleaning service will make sure less dirt gets caught in your computers and that they are cleaned properly.

Copiers

Your copy machine has a lot of moving parts.  These parts usually require oil, ink, and other sticky substances that attract dirt.  If you have a lot of dirt in the air at your office, your copier is more likely to go on the fritz.  That's why hiring a commercial cleaning service can save you money.  Instead of constantly waiting for a repair man who will simply clean the parts that seem to be jammed and replace them again, a cleaning service will keep the environment cleaner and consequently, your copier functioning properly for longer periods of time.

Fans

Most buildings have a lot fans working to circulate air through them, whether for heating or air conditioning purposes.  Filters make sure these fans move cleaner air, instead of simply pushing dirt around.  When these filters get clogged though, your fans have to work extra hard top push air through them.  Also, after a while, dirt builds up on the blades of the fans, causing them to spin less efficiently, and much more noisily.  Eventually, all they're doing is pushing dirt through the air, which can make your employees and customers sick.  By keeping your environment cleaner with regular commercial cleaning, these fans will be more likely to work properly and your filters won't need to be changed quite as often.   In the long run, a commercial cleaning service will save you a lot of money through technology that last longer and works better.

Different Seasons Require Different Commercial Cleaning

Whenever the seasons change, people tend to have a change of heart as well.  That includes your customers.  Some seasons bring them out to shop, while others cause them to want to stay holed up in their homes.  You should schedule regular commercial cleaning with CIA to make sure no matter what season they come to your business, you'll be prepared.  You might also want to consider a few specific types of cleaning to add to the list whenever the seasons do change, since changing weather patterns can mean changes in dust and pollen levels as well as air quality.

Spring Airing

Once winter is over, it's a good idea to open your building and let it air out.  Often we keep everything so sealed up in the winter, that the air becomes dense and almost suffocating for your customers and employees.  By taking in some fresh air, you get a new scent flowing through your building that can invigorate everyone inside.  This also means it's time to air out your window coverings.  We can make sure every curtain and blind gets a good disinfecting, so that it adds to the fresh smell in your office instead of adding to the heaviness of it.  You may want to switch to linens that use lighter colours in order to reflect more spring light instead of soaking it all up and blocking it out.

Summer Dusting

When summer arrives, it tends to dry everything out.  Then, when the wind blows, dust gets everywhere and settles in places you might not expect.  By hiring a commercial cleaning service like CIA, you can be sure that we will dust every nook and cranny regularly, so you don't have dust mites and other allergens flying around making your workers sick.  Have you ever thought about all the dust that settles into your electronics?  Overtime, they can make your computer run slower.  If your building gets a regular dusting by professionals though, less dust will be able to settle on your technology, keeping it running smoother longer, so your company can too.

Fall Debris Clearing

Fall means there will be a lot of debris falling around your building.  Dead leaves can clog gutters, get caught in walkways, and cause problems in gardens and hanging flowers.  We take care of exterior cleaning too.  CIA will make sure your garden, as well as the rest of your building exterior, is well cared for throughout the seasons.  That means, when fall arrives, your building will still look great, which will encourage people to come inside.

Winter Fabric Washing

When you're ready to seal everything up for the winter, it's important to make sure all your fabrics, including chairs and couches with material on them, are nice and clean.  Otherwise, when all those people spend more time inside, they'll be spending it on dirty linens, which is more likely to make them sick.  If your materials are clean, your building's interior will smell better too, which is nice when you're heating and recycling the same air.  That's just one more reason why hiring a commercial cleaning service in Melbourne year round is so important.
